Scooter Rallies and a Pinball Championship – Episode 92

2009 Dogwood ClassicThe 7hills scooter club rally is coming up in a few weeks. That is usually a ride out into the country, with camping and bonfires in an area where club members can stay out of trouble and avoid doing too much damage to themselves. The 2009 Dogwood Classic scooter rally will be held at Heavenly Acres Campground in Stanardsville, VA Friday, May 15 to Sunday, May 17.

Another big spring rally here on the east coast is the New York City Scooter Club block party, which is scheduled for the end of May. Their club motto is: If you have a Scooter, you’re in the Club. The block party, held in Brooklyn and attracts scoot fans from all over the northeast. I am jealous of our New York friends. They have a vibrant scooter scene and at least a dozen legitimate scooter shops to choose from in the New York city area.

Here is taste of what they have:

epclogo250black In my world, scooters are connected to many of my other interests and activities. One of those interests is a life long fascination with pinball machines. Nick Bennett happens to be one of those fellows whos life is dominated by pinball. I came across Nick’s website a
Nick Bennett few months ago, while referencing the Las Vegas Pinball Museum and later heard from him in an email about this summers European tournament. Although a bit of a digression from scooting, I think you will find this conversation interesting and most likely will see some similarities in Nicks passion for pinball and our passion for scooters. Music for this show is by Telling on Trixie a New York based band that has gathered a big web. I first heard about Telling on Trixie two years ago at podcamp New York. Checkout their website.

Thanks for the interview Dave, you’re clearly more at home being recorded than me!

Hi Dave, just wanted to say how much I love your pod cast. You’ve actually help me to make a living! I got into scootering last year with my Buddy 125 (I also added a BV 500 a few months ago). Since then, I started the Scooter Club of Metro Phoenix. We’re 150 members strong and growing.. not bad considering we just started last summer.

You see, I decided I liked scootering so much that I’d try and make a living at it. Your pod casts along with the scooter club really helped me to learn all about the scene. I just launched (it’s a soft launch so I still have 100’s of items to add over the next few weeks). It’s been a blast. Starting it got me to the Indy dealer show this winter.. and has got me to organize the first ever Phoenix scooter Rally, to take place October 17th. That is going to be held at a place called Joe’s Farm Grill. This place was just featured on Food Networks, Dinvers, Drivein’s and Dives. Joe is a pretty big scooter guy. Infact, he has in own, custom built scooter repair shot on the property. That lead to an article that I just wrote for the upcoming issue of Scoot Magazine. That lead to my asking Carlos Alazraqui, (recently featured on the cover of scoot magazine and the start of TV show Reno 911) to be our celebrity rider for the Rally. The Rally will be a benefit for the Maricopa County Animal Care and Control, the nations second largest animal shelter. I also got a tentative yes from the famous race car driver Bob Bondurant to attend (another scooter lover).

Anyway… I think you get the idea.. one thing lead to another. It really all started after i started listening to one of your pod casts and thought, how can I have fun, meet new friends, and make Money… PS, we’d love to have you in October if you’d like to come.

I live for many years on the West End, Glen Allen. Have a lot of friends in Richmond, what a great town.

Hard to believe that I inspire anyone else, but very glad to hear that you have gotten bit by the scooter bug. Pretty big jump from a 50cc to the BV500. Hope you enjoy the scoot community and find success in your business.

  4. For the uninitiated, the world of scooters mopeds and moterbikes is huge. I became aware of the culture by seeing footage of a Rally taking place in Los Angeles and became captivated by the economic benefits and lifestyle. By simply being, the fleet of bikes made a statement that resounds beyond the drone of the buzzing engines. I hope you view and make use of the VIdeo because it highlights the Culture in a classic and considerate manner. Scooters and Mopeds ROCK
